The Islands - Ramadan 2022

Strategic prayer for a disciple making movement in The Islands

Our Vision

We want to cover these Indian Ocean Islands with continuous 24/7 prayer during the entire 30 days of Ramadan. The Island are currently 99.9% Muslim, spirit possession and demonic affliction is common, and those who have chosen to follow Jesus are seen as rejecting their family, community and culture. We long for the day when we see small groups springing up across the islands, worshipping God in their own language and in their own way, unified, strong and unafraid - unable to stop themselves from speaking of the hope. Join us in praying that this month God would do just this, for nothing is impossible for Him!

24/7 for 30 Days

Ramadan is one of the five requirements (or pillars) of Islam. During each of its 30 days, Islanders are obligated to fast from dawn until sunset. No eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours followed by a feast of rich food at sunset. Rules are rigorously followed, and even saliva that collects in the mouth must be spat out.

Women typically spend the afternoons cooking for an evening of eating; a family meal at sunset, sometimes another meal before they go to sleep and some will wake before sunrise to eat and (more importantly) to drink water.

Islanders' religious zeal is high during this month, and many men and women go to the mosque for extra prayers in the evening. Many will also try to read the whole Qur'an during this time (about a tenth the length of the Bible). Others undoubtedly cheat - and each year at least a few are caught and arrested. Others genuinely believe that their fasting is earning them a place amongst the faithful in paradise; their fasting serving to increase their confidence in themselves and their pride in Islam.

But surely some of them must also have doubts, fears and questions. Some must recognise the sin in their hearts that they can never quite control, and wonder if their fasting and praying is really enough. Surely some must question whether there isn’t more to knowing God than blindly following rules.

As we pray together for Islanders this month, ask that many would begin searching, and that as they seek many would taste and see how good God is!

“How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings
They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light
(Psalm 36)
